From the Desk of Pastor Rob

Dear Fellow Travelers,
I always like to say that there is nothing ordinary about Ordinary Time. We are starting off 2022 in a big way. The congregation just elected a Pastor Nominating Committee who is diligently praying and discerning the future of ministry at our church and whether to call me into installed ministry this summer. We are also developing some plans for working on the building, and we will start planning for Lent and Holy Week in the couple months.
Bible Studies on Romans will continue through February. You can join us in person on Sundays after worship and Tuesdays at 10 AM on Zoom. We are using N.T. Wright’s “Romans for Everyone.” I have ordered new books and I will lead our classes during Lent. We will work on a “Wholehearted Faith.” There will be just enough Presbyterian polity mixed in so that those of you who would like to can join in membership at Easter.
As we go into the new year, I’d like for you to think about impact the faithfulness of our church, meeting every week, supporting missions, being a spiritual presence in Edmonds, has on the community around us. I met with Hallack Greider, Pastor at Maplewood Presbyterian, last month. We talked about the movement of the Holy Spirit in our community. He said that something is afoot. The world is changing, and we are anticipating new ways to grow and serve.
We continue to offer an alternative worship option via email and YouTube. Please contact the office to get on the email list.
On February 6, I will preach about Paul’s conversion in “He Appeared Also to Me.”
On February 13, I will explore “Cursed with Blessings.” It is not as scary as it sounds. Blessings and curses in the Bible are opportunities for choosing what kind of people we want to be.
On February 20, I will teach about Joseph and his brothers in Egypt in “Setting Shame Aside.” Joseph is an amazing figure in Genesis with so much to tell us about ourselves.
February 27 is the last Sunday before Lent.
Then on March 2nd we will have an Ash Wednesday service
You are an amazing and blessed community of believers. It is a privilege to serve with you. I wish you all every grace for February!
With the Peace of our God,
Pastor Rob

MISSION NEWS

Thank-You notes were received from several mission recipients, among them was an up-date from World Concern: Thank you for your faithful support through another difficult year. Your gift makes a tremendous difference in vital, life-saving ways:
Providing emergency food for families today and over the long-term. You saved Maria’s grandson! At six months old, he suffered from malnutrition. Sick and listless because the family could not provide the needed nutrition for him, they thought he would die! This is when you stepped in. Because of your generosity, Maria learned to plant and harvest a garden. Chickens you provided gave eggs for food and to sell. Goats you provided gave milk for the family and provided meat for the family and a source of income to buy other necessities. Her grandson is thriving now and so is the family with their goat farm.

Our January meeting turned out to be a birthday party for Kathryn G in honor of her 101st birthday. Eleven of us met at the Pancake Haus in downtown Edmonds and Kathy M made it a very special event with special decorations, flowers for all who attended, and a delicious birthday cake.
Our next meeting will again be at the church on Wednesday, February 9 and will be a salad luncheon following our 11:30 AM business meeting. Please wear something red to celebrate Valentine’s Day. We are looking forward to seeing everyone there.
Margaret S, Moderator.

You’re invited to join us for Home Communion If you cannot gather in person, we will gather over the internet to share the Lord’s Supper together. On Sunday, February 6th, at 1PM we will gather via Zoom for home communion together. We will have a special solo by Jerry Goodman as part of our service. Please have your own bread (simple is best), and grape juice / wine or other beverage common to your home.

Per Capita Reminder

1/27/2022

Our congregation is part of the Presbyterian Church (USA), the Synod of Alaska- Northwest, and Northwest Coast Presbytery. Each year we are assessed an amount per member (per capita) to support the operations of each of these governing bodies, including salaries, meeting expenses, and travel expenses. The 2022 per capita assessment is $49.73, and is divided in this way: NWC Presbytery ($40.50), Synod ($0.25), and General Assembly ($8.98). If you are able to pay for your per capita, that keeps this expense out of our general budget. Please put “per capita” in the memo line on your check, or place the amount in your per capita envelope when you send that in to the church. Thank-you!
