What Legacy Do You Want to Leave?

5/27/2021

I just finished reading a book entitled Stuck, by Terry B. Walling. In chapter 16, Terry talks about how we, as a society and especially in the church setting, frequently toss our older members aside and let them “enjoy retirement.” He makes the point that these members are the most experienced and knowledgeable resource society has, and we don’t utilize them.

I think Terry is talking about a good portion of Edmonds Presbyterian Church (you and me). I’ve had many people tell me to relax and take it easy, “you’ve earned it.” But Terry asks the question. What does God want you to focus on from here to the end? Yes, I am talking about the end of your earthly life, and the beginning of your eternal life. What are you supposed to do for the kingdom of God?

The chapter continues with these questions that really got me to thinking; What legacy do you want to leave? To whom do you want to entrust what you know? What few could most benefit from your lifelong learning and skills? How can you get near them to build relationships?

Edmonds Presbyterian has been gifted with many Saints, if you are still reading these opening stories that typically Pastor Amy would have written, I consider you a saint for reading my meanderings. I’ve been privileged to be a part of the weekly Bible studies for the last several months. Hearing some of your life experiences has been amazing. You have so much knowledge and unique experiences that need to be shared.

Nearly a year ago, a group of EPC members began a 21-day challenge for racial and social justice. We reached out to a colleague at the Edmonds School District with the intent of providing assistance any way we could for young people who are struggling in our area. Last week, we were contacted about a new program the district is starting. I hope you will prayerfully consider to be a part of this program. Below are the details of what the program is about:

HELP WANTED

We are looking for 40 volunteers. Preference will be given to people with lots of life experience. Typically experience comes with age, so the older you are the better you will fit this position.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Skills - Share life experiences with one high school sophomore or junior. Tell them about where you were born, your family, your career, your hopes, your dreams, in other words tell them about your life. Discuss issues of importance to the student. NO ALGEBRA, NO CHEMISTRY, NOTHING TO EMBARRASS YOURSELF WITH, BY SAYING, I DON’T HAVE A CLUE HOW TO DO THAT PROBLEM.

Meet – Weekly (at least once per month in person, additional meetings can be done by telephone or some zoom type computer meeting) during the school year. You can meet them for coffee, ice cream, a walk in the park, or skate boarding (please make sure your medical insurance premiums are up to date if you choose skate boarding as your method of meeting in person).

Requirements – Be able to share God’s Mercy, Grace, and Love with this student. My understanding is Mercy is not getting what we deserve, Grace is getting what we don’t deserve, and Love is realizing these students are children of God and may not know about Mercy, Grace, or Love (God’s Love).
How are the students selected? - These students will come from low income and high-risk factors for success in the Edmonds School District.

Apply NOW! – Contact Kim in the church office for the paperwork. Applications are requested before the end of June – that is really soon, so call now!

What legacy do you want to leave?

God Bless you all.

Session News

Your Session continues to prayerfully review applications for our pastoral position at Edmonds Presbyterian. In the meantime, Calvin Presbyterian Church graciously offered to share their sermons/teaching with us. This is also the first time since the pandemic started that we will be learning with a sermon series. We started the first teaching last week on May 16th, 2021. In addition to shared sermons, we will also be utilizing Calvin’s staff for communion.

We are looking forward in sharing news as soon as we find suitable pastor for our church. In the meantime, pray for the Session and for Edmonds Presbyterian Church.

Jeremiah 29:11 “For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.” Lead us and guide us, O Lord, to be about the work of your kingdom even as the search for a new pastor continues. Bless all who have taken on extra responsibility and fill them with a sense of your love and presence. We pray in your Son's name, Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Women’s Association News

The Women’s Association met via Zoom with Linda R acting as host on Wednesday, May 12 with 9 women attending. Secretary and mission chairman Ruth R read a summary of our mission projects and urged us to send our mission offering to Treasurer Kathy M so funds can be distributed to each of them this month.

Our program was a presentation by Kathy Kennard of the Red Cross about their Sound the Alarm program that plans to place free fire alarms in every home they can reach, in order to save lives from house fires. Their goal is to place 250 new smoke alarms into homes in the region before June 15. Local fire departments have volunteered to deliver and place the alarms after the Red Cross provides the alarms. Margaret S is sending out information on how to be sure you have an escape plan and how to request a new smoke alarm. When you receive the request form please enter your address and sign it then return it to Margaret so she can deliver it to the Red Cross. Please contact Margaret if you did not receive a request form.

We also received information about Earthquake safety. You are all acquainted with the DROP, COVER, and HOLD teaching in our schools. That is still good advice. You can prepare by picking a safe spot in each room away from windows or from heavy objects that could fall on you. Under a table is one good place. Stay indoors until the shaking stops, then look around with caution and test any stairs before using them. Make a family plan of a safe meeting place, who to call for help or if separated, and make an emergency kit with at least 3 days food and water supply.

Our June meeting on June 9th will be our last meeting until September. Jan Griffith said she will try to join us to tell of her activities in Sweden. We are asked to keep her in our prayers that she regains her energy after a bout with exhaustion syndrome. Also keep Ruth and Billy Joe R in our prayers that their health will be restored. We all need to give a prayer of thanks that with the help of immunizations the COVID Virus is having less influence on our lives and we are having hope that our church will be back to “normal” soon.

You Go First

Charlotte and Ben are separated by more than a thousand miles. On the surface, their lives seem very different. Charlotte wants to be a geologist and keeps a rock collection in her room. Ben is obsessed with Harry Potter, presidential history, and recycling. But the two have more in common than they think. They’re both highly gifted. They’re both experiencing family turmoil. And they both sit alone at lunch.

Over the course of a week, Charlotte and Ben—online friends connected only by a Scrabble game— intersect in unexpected ways as they struggle to navigate middle school. The link between the two main characters becomes a subtle bond that enables each one to make it through an emotionally challenging week and come out stronger. You Go First reminds us that no matter how hard it is to keep our heads above troubled water, we never struggle alone.

Please, won’t you sponsor this book for Westgate Elementary?

To sponsor this month’s book, send a check to the church office for $9.22.
