Dear Fellow Travelers,

The coming of the Holy Spirit in Acts is the kickoff for the ministry of the apostles. Pentecost is coming on May 19th. A day for wearing red and waving streamers. The Holy Spirit is the wind and the breath of life. Celebrate the coming of the Spirit!

There are a lot of great things happening at Edmonds PC. On May 18th, the Edmonds Toy Shop which is part of the Edmonds Food Bank will do their annual bicycle distribution event at our church. Drop by and take a look at the great work they are doing.

The Edmonds Coop Preschool is gracing our halls with little voices and buzzing with activity every weekday morning. We are so excited to have them with us. They still have open spots and recruiting enrollment for next fall, so if you know anyone with a preschooler, let them know about ECP at www.edmondscooppreschool.org. They provide a vital and much-needed service in our community.

We are continuing Bible Study every week, both after worship and Tuesdays at 10 AM via zoom. We are about 3/4 the way through “Acts”. You can join anytime, as each lesson stands on its own. If you would like join or need a link for the Tuesday group, please contact us at [email protected]. We are creating plans to study 2 Corinthians in the Fall.

Please tell your friends and family about our Online Streaming Worship. We are averaging about 30 views per week, and would love to see it grow! Please go to the www.epc-pcusa.org website for the latest links.

This is what I am planning for worship in May.

Sunday, May 5th. Loving someone is all in. It is exhilarating and risky at the same time. In “No Greater Love than This” I explore two of the greatest passages about love and how it means so much more than performative love the church often teaches us. Tough love is often just tough and unnecessary, when we could just be a lot more mutual and understanding in our love.

Sunday, May 12th. In “Jesus and World” I discuss how the separation of Christians from the world isn’t what we think it is. Being in the world is messy and necessary, but we don’t have to be led by it. In Matthew and John we see the tension of this irony. We can also see how these verses are often used to create an exclusive club Christianity which isn’t Christ-like.

Sunday, May 19th. Pentecost! The coming of the wind and flames and tongues! The Holy Spirit was present throughout history, so what was special about this moment? In “Groaning of the Soul” the Spirit couldn’t be hidden any longer because the longing of our hearts demanded that we have an Advocate after Jesus’s ascension. The Spirits coming is the fulfillment of God’s grace being on our hearts.

Sunday, May 26th. Are you often tongue-tied? Do you practice what you will say repeatedly? While practice is good, sometimes we just don’t trust ourselves. Being the in Holy Spirit and being right with God gives us the confidence in “Knowing What to Say.” Leader Amy C will preach.
It is a joy to serve God with you! I look forward to worshiping with you in May!

Grace and Peace, Pastor Rob

ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING:  The final total for the One Great Hour of Sharing offering is $540.  This money will now be sent on to help people who badly need some assistance.  Thank you to all who contributed.  It is a good total for a congregation our size.

MISSION DONATIONS:  Session voted to tithe the pre-school rent money for mission funding.  Money in that account this month will go to Eagle Wings disAbility ministries and the Jean Kim Foundation for the Homeless Education.  Eagle Wings disAbility ministries will receive $205 to help provide social and educational opportunities for people with special needs and to give respite and encouragement to caregivers.  The Jean Kim Foundation for the Homeless Education will receive $204 to help homeless adults receive a college education.  Students receive help with housing, food and clothing, school supplies, and counseling to help keep up with their studies, and assistance in finding grants to help pay for tuition.

Matthew House will receive the $100 from the monthly mission allocation.  Matthew House is a ministry to families of prisoners incarcerated in the Monroe Prison.  Families who drive a long distance can stay overnight.  Visiting families can get a meal and have a place to relax before going home.  There is a playground for children.  Needy families can have groceries, clothing and toys to take home.  Families who want prayer and counseling will be helped.

Fellowship Hour and Bible Study after worship is continuing.

Game Night was canceled for February and March, but was  held on Saturday, April 13 at 7pm, and  will continue to be held on the second Saturday of each month in the Friendship Hall of the church.

A potluck lunch after worship was held on Sunday, April 14. Sandwiches and finger foods were served so those going to Bible Study could serve themselves  and take their food with them.   A BIG THANK YOU to all who came and to all who contributed to a fun day of having an opportunity to eat together and socialize.

Seven women including 2 guests met in the EPC Friendship Hall on Wednesday, April 10 for a business meeting , lunch and to hear speaker Andrea Wyatt tell us about Cocoon House.

Pat Thrasher from Terrace View Church where the Neighbors-in-Need food bank is located informed us that the 150 Easter Baskets our church put together were given out by Linda R and Kathy C of our church and were greatly appreciated by the people receiving them.  One lady receiving two baskets for her children even cried with gratitude when she saw how beautiful the baskets were.  There were still 20 or more cars in line after all the baskets were given out and they easily could have used 30 more.  Many thanks to all the people from our church who donated to our project of securing the many materials needed to put the baskets and those who donated money to make it possible to purchase the baskets and small fluffy animals and candy that went into them.  Also thanks to the 13 people who showed up to put the baskets together.  Many hands make light work...it only took 2 hours to put the 150 baskets together under the direction of Ruth R, Mission Chairman.

When it was announced that the kitchen needed paper plates, one of the members went home and brought a big stack of paper plates from her own supply and donated them to the church to use.  A big “THANK YOU” to Laura D for her instant solution to our request.

Last meeting the suggestion was made that we sponsor a rummage sale  in our parking lot and donate the proceeds  to the church to help pay for the new roof.

After a lunch of lasagna, salad and apple pie we all joined into a discussion how Cocoon House helps homeless youth ages 13 to 24 with a place to stay, showers, laundry facilities, computers, and a quiet place to study or just hang out.  They have nurses and counselors available to provide help as needed.

Our next meeting will be at 12 noon at the Pancake Haus on May 8.  All women are invited to come and guests are welcome.
