Pastor Amy's thoughts...

Greetings!

In June I had the privilege to attend the CREDO conference sponsored by the Board of Pensions of the Presbyterian Church USA. CREDO is a week-long conference designed for mid-career pastors to provide an opportunity to plan well for the rest of our careers – financially, spiritually, vocationally, emotionally, and physically. For me, this was a solid reminder of what each of us should know – in order to do our work well, we need to tend to all these areas of our lives. The Psalmist knew this, too. In Psalm 139 God is praised, saying, “For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

This month, the Choices Stewardship material (©PCUSA, 1997) invites us to consider how we care for the body & mind God has given us. Each of us has our particular challenges. My care plan will necessarily look different than yours. Here are a few questions from that curriculum to get you started thinking about the good stewardship of your mind and body:
  • How do you take care of your body? Notice the things you do today for your body.
  • What is your favorite way to get some exercise? Is it more helpful to your body or your mind?
  • Would you rather be wise or smart? Why?
  • What is your definition of play?
  • The saying goes, Humor is the best medicine.” Think of a time when you couldn’t stop laughing.
  • What is one way you have changed or could change your lifestyle to be healthier?
My CREDO plan that resulted from my retreat includes simple things to remind me that I am, in body and mind, a child of God. I have an exercise plan. I am attending to regular routine medical appointments. I am seeking to live a healthier lifestyle, and I am organizing my time more intentionally to provide for regular “Sabbaths” where I rest from my labors. This month, I invite you to consider what you are doing to take good care of the body and mind God has given you.

To get you started, here’s a joke to start working on that goal of laughing more: This one comes from “Talk like a pirate day”, which was Saturday September 19th … “What’s a pirate’s favorite letter? [any ideas? ] You think it’s “R” but it be the “C.”

Friends, let’s be good stewards of our lives together.

In Christ,
Pastor Amy

Heart for Kids?

On Sunday, September 20, we bade farewell to our childcare attendant, Tamara M. She provided excellent care to our children this past year and we are grateful for her service. Going forward, we will be relying on volunteers from the congregation to assist in the childcare room approximately once a month, along with a parent of one of the children in the room. If you have a heart for helping our children, please prayerfully consider joining our rotation of childcare volunteers. Let Pastor Amy know if you're interested or have questions about this.

Two adult Sunday school classes are happening this month!

Doug Daniel is continuing his class on “The Bible in historical context, meeting in the back classroom on October 4th. Then for four weeks beginning October 11th the Rev. Alan Beasley will be offering a class on C.S. Lewis’s book, “A Grief Observed.” Doug’s class will resume in November following the last of the C.S. Lewis classes.

Doug describes his class this way:
The Bible in Historical Context" - Come with Doug Daniel on a journey of 10,000 years, as we explore the events of the Bible in the light of the wider world in which they occurred. Find out about the Assyrians, the Hittites, Egypt, and how the Trojan War affected ancient Israel. Learn what Rome had to do with the Jewish Festival of Hanukkah, and how a terrible war sealed the fate of two great religions. You will see the Bible in a new light, and understand how God's purpose has been worked out in the course of human history. We will meet October 4th, then resume the classes on November 8th.

Here’s what Alan says about his class:
We are going to study C.S Lewis’ A Grief Observed. This book is a kind of journal that he wrote right after his wife died in July of 1960. He recorded very honestly the various thoughts and feelings that he had in this time of heavy grief. As we read it, we see him going through the process of grieving and by the end of the book there are unmistakable signs of healing in his life. I think Lewis was afraid that he would embarrass his friends by the things he reveals about his thoughts in the most difficult days of his grief. He never allowed the book to be published under his own name as long as he lived. Yet it is clear that he is far closer to God at the end of this process than he was at the beginning.
There are many valuable things we can learn from Lewis and also from each other in this class. In the past when I have taught this book, people have often shared examples of their own experiences of grief, and every time this happened it was of great benefit to the rest of us.
I believe that our own faith will be strengthened as we attempt to understand what Lewis has written in this very short book. Copies of the book are available from Pastor Amy.

God bless, Alan Beasley

This year’s retreat theme is “meeting God in the messy middle.” At the retreat, Jeff and Margie will introduce us to Spiritual practices to empower Christian Professionals to be God’s people in the midst of the challenges and opportunities in today’s market place. Have you ever wondered, “How do we navigate as faithful followers of Jesus in the messy places in our lives? Particularly what do we do when our work seems to leave us with no good options? When should Christians compromise?” Intrigued? I hope you will consider attending. The location will be Bethany Presbyterian Church, Seattle. The cost is $35 until October 1, then $50. More information can be found at renewalminnw.org.

On Sunday July 19th we held worship outside on the lawn. It was a joy to worship outdoors with the beauty of God’s creation all around us. Thank-you to Kathy Miller for her assistance with the sound system and for all who moved and returned chairs so that we didn’t need to sit on the grass.

Come join the women of the church either for a daytime or an evening monthly bible study. This year’s study guide is titled “Come to the Waters!” Through the study we will explore the many ways water is important in scripture, and consider how water is important in our lives today. Come either the 4th Wednesday of the month at 12:15 PM (location varies) or the 4th Thursday of most months (some are the 3rd) at 7:00 PM at the church. This is a great way to introduce a friend to our church family.
