Dear Fellow Travelers,
Easter is almost here! Lent is all about preparation. I just returned from a vacation in Spain and Germany visiting some old friends. A highlight for me was visiting the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, which is Antoni Gaudi’s famous cathedral. Starting in 1882, it is still under construction. It should be completed in a few more years. I was overwhelmed by its beauty and its whimsy. Despite its huge size, it has the feeling of intimacy and organic hominess, unlike any other place. That sense of grandeur and familiarity reminds me so much of Holy Week. The story of Jesus’s passion and resurrection is at once so familiar and also indescribably amazing.
Here is a picture I took of the Sagrada Familia.

I also did a short video on my feelings about the humanity of Jesus and the Church while I was there:

We are cooperating with Maplewood Presbyterian, Calvin Presbyterian, and Terrace View Presbyterian for Holy Week worship this year. I will participate in the worship with Revs. Hallack Greider, Janine Moriarty, Emily Mitchell, and Neil Trainer. We will gather at Maplewood for Maundy Thursday and at Calvin for Good Friday. We will celebrate Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday at 10 AM as usual at Edmonds. Stay tuned for more details as we get closer.

This is what I am planning for worship in March.

Sunday, March 3rd. I will preach “Jesus the Man” about the fully human and fully divine nature of Jesus. Sometimes we have difficulty seeing Jesus as a real man who learned and grew. It is essential to understand how only a real human Jesus can be God with us. And only a real divine Jesus could be our savior.

Sunday, March 10th. Margaret K will preach “Jesus We, Jesus I” about Jesus’s relationship with the leader of the Pharisees, Nicodemus, in John 3. Through clever language and turns of phrase we can see how Nicodemus became an ally of Jesus.

Sunday, March 17th. Since Jesus was a real man, he was filled with fear as he approached the cross. Through obedience to God, he gained the courage to complete his journey. I explore his incredible bravery in “Completed in Obedience.”

Sunday, March 24th. This is Palm Sunday! As the people shouted “Hosanna” Jesus emptied himself. Paul described how Jesus’s strength was in this emptying. In 2nd Corinthians, Paul would “Gladly Boast in His Weakness” showing that there was no other way to do the work of Christ Jesus in the world.

Sunday, March 31st. Easter is finally here! I will preach about the renewal of Resurrection in “A People of Strange Language.” The people of Israel were redeemed by leaving the foreign land of Egypt. God fulfilled His promise. This complete transformation is what we experience when we leave the strange language of our old lives and we are reborn in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

It is a joy to serve God with you! I look forward to worshiping with you in March!
Grace and Peace, Pastor Rob

“SOUPER BOWL SUNDAY”
Our Congregation gave a generous amount of 47 food items and $62 cash.  The Concern for Neighbors Food Bank will certainly be able to use this donation since they are serving more clients now than in previous years.

ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING
The One Great Hour of Sharing Offering will be given on Palm Sunday.  This offering will help feed hungry people in many countries.  One way to help alleviate hunger is to give people a way to earn income to support their families.

Gifts of seeds, farming tools, fishing equipment, and farm animals help people feed their families and earn income to support themselves.  A bakery in a remote area of Malawi received help from One Great Hour of Sharing to begin operation, providing employment for local women and a market for local farmers’ grain.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance provides help when disaster strikes.  When Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico, many roofs were badly damaged.  Help to build new roofs was given by a land trust which received money from One Great Hour of Sharing.
Though the offering will be given on Palm Sunday, people can give through April 14th if that is easier for you.

EASTER BASKETS FOR CONCERN FOR NEIGHBORS FOOD BANK
The Easter Baskets will be filled at 10am on March 23rd.  Anyone who would like to help is welcome to come.

We need donations of candy, grass, small stuffed animals, baskets and tissue paper.  Candy should be individually wrapped.  Any size candy is fine.  Please do not give gum since it is not good for the younger children.  The food bank has asked for 150 baskets this year, more than we have ever made.

Women’s Association Meeting

Eight women and 2 guests gathered for our meeting in the Friendship Hall of the church at 11:30 am for a business meeting and luncheon followed by a presentation telling about their organization and how it works with the community by Molly Meyers from Homage. Homage, formerly the Council on Aging, continues to provide help for senior citizens or disabled persons who need help with building wheelchair ramps, minor household repairs, yard work, housekeeping, shopping, and personal assistance. They also have volunteers who help drive people to appointments or shopping. They are staffed by volunteers so if you are looking for a volunteer activity that benefits the community drop in and register at their office across the street from Wendy’s on 196th St in Lynnwood or call Molly Meyers at 425-746-3786.

Secretary Ruth R reported that three $75 gift cards were given to the Christmas family along with other gift cards to total $600 for gifts and groceries. She also sent a Valentine gift of a card and candy to Emily S, (Margaret S granddaughter) who is attending College in Maryland.

Ruth has also ordered new booklets with a bible story to put in the Easter baskets we are making for the Neighbors In Need Food bank. They have requested 150 baskets this year so we are having to purchase everything needed for the Easter baskets. We plan to meet at the church to put the baskets together on Saturday, March 23 and hand them out at the food bank on March 26.

Kathy M states she has a friend who does estate sales who would like to help us have a Rummage sale at the church when the weather is warmer and more predictable. The friend is accomplished at evaluating and pricing items for sale.

Kathy also reported that it is imperative that if anyone from an infant to older age has a sudden loss of hearing they need to see a hearing specialist right away in order for their hearing to be restored.

Our next meeting will be at a local restaurant,  place, date and time will be announced in church.
Margaret S, Women’s Association Liaison Elder
